Not the summer I had planned & open to improvement!

I'm sure in the months to come I will look back at this summer and notch it up as one of my worst. At the moment I'm just plodding through it as best I can. Since losing my Gran my OH has been ill and my dad has been ill and then fell and made the existing problems 10 times worse.

I've just reached the end of the week which saw me being a taxi service transporting OH and dad to 5 different hospital and doctors appointments between them. I had absolutely dreaded taking my dad to hospital because there's the hassle of parking and hardly ever any spaces and then I have the joy of searching for a wheelchair to get him inside. On one occasion I was very lucky as an ambulance man assisted with the wheelchair pushing. We went to another hospital the next day and the lifts were a nightmare, it's like a scrum to get in and out, rather like getting on a London tube.

Anyway the end of this difficult week has arrived and generally things are picking up for the poorly ones however my dad will be going for an operation next week which my sister will come over for and organise. Hopefully that will be the start of getting him mobile again.

We got finished at hospital early one day and that meant I could take advantage of a stroll in the sun around the Sunk Island area and along the bank of the Humber where I used to go gathering samphire as a kid.

My route home took me via a new craft outlet at Hornsea Freeport, it was definitely worth a look as they have some great fabric at low prices and pretty much loads of other stuff for sewing, knitting, crochet, felting etc.

I bought a few nice fat quarters.

Not that I'm finding much time at the moment to do anything creative, doing normal work is a task in itself.

I think in the last 5 weeks, other than my taxi-ing duties & school day we've only been out twice, managed a stroll along the walls in York last weekend.

Then last night we went for tea in Scarborough with the little furry friend to Eat Me Cafe. This is called a tin plate feta and walnut salad, it arrives quite quirky wrapped in paper, chased by a slice of key lime pie :)

I'm not sure which street we parked down but Scarborough does have a lovely mish mash of architectural styles as you wander around. I hadn't noticed this wonderful Gothic looking place before.

Next week I will catch up with some work and then hopefully I might have chance to visit the Driffield Show on Wednesday if everything is ticking along ok.

July Reveal - Mollie Makes 42

Hot off the press today, Mollie Makes 42 and I can reveal my latest craft tutorial is featured.

It's a vintage caravan, plushie / cushion tutorial! Some of you know my like for the humble vintage caravan which turned into a fabric design, well that was the starting point for creating these cushions.

It has been in the making for many weeks and I've been keeping hush hush as requested by Mollie Makes until publication day, phew that was difficult!

I've spent quite a few hours burning the midnight oil with this one although it was somewhat less painful than the Nutcracker man tutorial which dragged on for months in the cold weather working times.

I'm really delighted with how this has come out and it should be pretty easy to follow and make if you fancy a go. 

After I had made my sample caravans I waited for some fine weather to trundle around Scarborough and Bridlington to take some lifestyle photos of them.

The caravans below were shot at the beach huts in Brid and these particular cushions are for sale in my Folksy shop along with some new colour caravan fabric.

May is well underway and following the sale of one of my needle cases in the previous post I've had an order for 7 more which is lovely.
I'm also very busy with other projects which in turn has lead to going out and about with the camera to the seaside so I have some pictures for this post.

Went to Scarborough last weekend and the Italian gardens had been beautifully planted up, these are just snaps from my phone so they don't really do it justice. The pastel coloured flowers in the centre bed were very pretty.

I always like the reflections captured on a sunny day in the glass on the covered bridge near the Spa.

Today it was Bridlington with the camera and to the beach huts.

Bob came too and posed outside the yellow one with his new car!

It was pretty blustery and we didn't have long before it rained.

Had some fun messing about with photo filters on my Bridlington pictures, the seaside is always a great place to find some interesting and quirky things to shoot.

I had the Aga serviced the other day so that it's as good as can be for my Christmas cooking, and for some warmth downstairs! Before that happened and earlier in the week, whilst it was at a low temperature, I made a couple of mini Christmas cakes. It's a recipe I tried and enjoyed last year, from the Boutique Baking book. Here we have before and after baking.

I have slowed down with crafty things as it's too cold in the house but I'm doing some crochet and I made a few of these little stocking tree decorations, one of which is winging its way to my giveaway winner Helen.

Also managed a couple of days off last week and went to Scarborough to the wonderful Eat Me Cafe for a plate of their legendary creamed mushrooms on toast.

Whilst walking through the woods and gardens in Scarborough I met this little chap, I know he's not native and I'm a huge fan of supporting the reds but he was very cute and came right up to me on the edge of this wall, he actually looked like he was going to jump on my arm for the promise of a bit of food!

On a trip to York I spotted this rather unusual Nutcracker.

Also in York I did a bit of festive shopping and it is lovely when some shops get it so right. The atmosphere in the shop, pleasant staff, the interesting items and the lovely packaging, the shop I went in was The Imaginary and it seems to be part of the Yorkshire Soap Co, look at the pretty pink bag.

All my items were beautifully wrapped by a charming young chap with a waistcoat and cravat. Inside the bag I had bought some pretty glass candle holders, they looked very festive and traditional when lit in the shop.

Another little treat for me, a pretty silk scarf with birds on. Did I buy anything for anyone else I hear you ask..... 

I did buy a few bits, I don't have a huge circle of people to buy for which is handy as I don't enjoy shopping much. Plus, this year, I've decided with a couple of friends that we have reached the point and age were we all have enough stuff and maybe we should cut back on the gift buying for cost and practical reasons. Fortunately these friends were quite difficult to buy for so that has taken some pressure off.

I really like to make a handmade gift but I haven't had time recently and I know that puts some pressure on other friends to make me one back and I don't want to do that as we all have enough festive stress, but it is still nice to find pressies for people you understand well and know what they like.

The thing I'm least liking spending money on this Christmas is cards, or rather stamps for the cards, they are so expensive. I do like to send cards because a card and a letter is one way, once a year when I get to catch up with friends who live far and wide. I think I will probably aim for sending more digital greetings in the future if stamps continue to go up, the stamp is becoming as costly as the card!

Something I have gone a bit mad with is coffee, I had a delivery of these bags of beans this week and I think I have another 3 bags to arrive before Christmas, part of these are my subscription coffees and some others are ones to experiment with over the holidays.

That reminds me, time for coffee!...

Bob's been to Scarborough again!

It's been quite a busy end to my week. Thursday and Friday saw me delivering and then collecting a selection of my textile artwork for assessment in order to be re-admitted as a full member of East Riding Artists. The work is assessed by people such as museum curators, college lecturers and then we get to know in about a week if we are successful. I have submitted myself as a textile artist this time rather than a digital artist so we'll see what happens!
It's a weird selection process because you don't necessarily get in if your work is good, some excellent artists have been turned down. Maybe it comes down to personal taste of the assessors.


I was up early today as I had to take my car to Scarborough for it's MOT and service, this is always a bit of a pain as the MOT falls in the middle of winter and I usually find myself traipsing around in the cold for half a day whilst it's done. I was lucky this year as the sun was shining in Scarborough, chilly though.


I took Bob the Bunny and the night before we had searched Trip Advisor to see if there was a nice cafe we could kill a bit of time in. I found 2 which sounded good and not your usual seaside greasy spoon. The one I went for as I came to it first was Eat Me cafe, near the Stephen Joseph Theatre.

It was quite nice inside, calming shades of grey, interesting artwork and a friendly atmosphere.

It's gets better, when the tea came just look at the lovely tea cosies, Bob was impressed with the knitting!

I'd read they do a good mushrooms on toast and as there wasn't much time for breakfast this morning, mushrooms was my food of choice. 

Wow this was such a substantial plate full and it was devine, I felt like I'd gone to mushroom heaven, the creamed sauce was delicious, the bread was just lovely. My dining partner had the veggie breakfast which was equally good. 
Eat Me cafe was a little gem of a place, highly recommended and I will look forward to going again.


Other lovely things I found in Scarborough were fabric.... but not to buy this time! Quite expensive interior fabric which I snapped through the shop windows.

I bought some wool in a really good craft shop I hadn't been in before, despite the lady saying she'd been there for 9 years! These 2 balls of patterned wool were cheaper than I saw in a shop in York last week.

I also bought a really small crochet hook as I'm having a go at the wrist warmers in the current Mollie Makes, I've made a start when I got back this afternoon, wonder how long these will take or if I'll stick it out..... watch this space for progress!

Not a bad morning, car done by lunch time & scraped through the MOT so it'll keep me a going a bit longer. 
Time to relax now with the coffee machine and a Creme Egg!
